The Original.
In the late 1840’s, Henry Christy returned to England from Constantinople with a
sample of loop pile fabric, which was new to the Western World. By 1851 his brother
Richard had mechanically reproduced this cloth and the Turkish terry towel was created.
The first towels were shown at the Great Exhibition of 1851 at Crystal Palace in
London, England. In the same year, a set was presented to Queen Victoria who immediately
ordered more of Christy’s ‘Royal Turkish Towels.’ |
