History |

 |
|
In the late 1840’s Henry Christy returned to England from Constantinople with a
sample of looped pile fabric, which was new to the Western World. By 1851 his brother
Richard had created the first mechanical loom to produce this remarkable cloth.
Thus was born the first terry towel. |

|
In 1851 the Christy towel was shown at The Great Exhibition Crystal Palace in London,
England and presented to Queen Victoria who immediately ordered more. Over the decades,
British popularity of Christy products and shops continued to grow. |

The development of Christy as a trusted British company has a long, rich 150 year
plus heritage. This heritage includes awards and accolades for excellence and service.
Christy has served generations of loyal British shoppers.
